What are Open Graph tags?
Open Graph (OG) tags are meta tags that tell social networks and messaging apps how to display a link. When you share a page on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack or Discord, the platform reads og:title, og:description and og:image to build the preview card. X (Twitter) uses its own Twitter Card tags, which this generator creates too.
How to generate Open Graph tags
- Enter the title and description you want people to see when your link is shared.
- Add the full page URL and a full image URL (1200 × 630 px is recommended).
- Choose the content type: website, article, product or profile.
- Pick a Twitter Card style and add your X username.
- Copy the tags and paste them into the
<head>of your page.
Open Graph image size and tips
- Use 1200 × 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio). It displays well on almost every platform.
- Keep file size under 1 MB so previews load quickly. Our image compressor can shrink it.
- Keep important text away from the edges, as some apps crop the image to a square.
- Use an absolute URL starting with
https://. Relative paths do not work.
Why social previews matter
A link with a clear image and headline gets far more clicks than a bare URL. Good OG tags do not change your Google rankings directly, but more clicks and shares bring more visitors and more chances for other sites to link to you. If your preview does not update after a change, social networks may be showing a cached version: use Facebook’s Sharing Debugger to refresh it.
The essential Open Graph tags
og:title: the headline shown on the share card. Can differ from your SEO title, for example more conversational.og:description: one or two sentences below the title.og:image: the preview image. The most important tag for clicks.og:url: the canonical address of the page.og:type: usually website for pages and article for blog posts.og:site_name: your brand name.
Twitter (X) cards
X reads Open Graph tags as a fallback, but adding twitter:card lets you choose between a small summary card and a summary_large_image card with a full-width image. Large image cards usually get more engagement. Adding twitter:site links the card to your X account.
Designing a great share image
- Use 1200 × 630 px and keep the file under 1 MB (under 300 KB is ideal).
- Put a short, bold headline on the image. Many people read the image before the title.
- Include your logo small in a corner for brand recognition.
- Test how it looks as a small square, because WhatsApp and some apps crop it.
Testing your tags
- Paste the tags in your page’s
<head>and publish. - Use Facebook’s Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector to preview and refresh the card.
- Send the link to yourself on WhatsApp to see the mobile preview.
On WordPress, SEO plugins like Rank Math and Yoast create these tags automatically from each page’s featured image and settings. This generator is ideal for custom sites, landing pages and checking what your tags should contain.
