How to calculate ACoS

ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sales) shows how much you spend on ads for every unit of sales they bring in:

ACoS = ad spend ÷ ad sales × 100. If you spend $250 on ads and they bring $1,000 of sales, your ACoS is 25%.

ACoS, ROAS and TACoS explained

  • ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) = ad sales ÷ ad spend. It is the same number turned around: 25% ACoS = 4× ROAS. Google and Meta ads usually report ROAS, Amazon reports ACoS.
  • TACoS (Total ACoS) = ad spend ÷ total sales × 100, including organic sales. A falling TACoS means your ads are helping you rank and sell without ads too.
  • Break-even ACoS = your profit margin before ad costs. If you keep 30% of the price before ads, any ACoS under 30% is profitable.

What is a good ACoS?

There is no single number: a good ACoS is one below your break-even ACoS. Many sellers accept a high ACoS while launching a product to win reviews and rank, then bring it down to 15–30% once sales are steady. Enter your margin above and the calculator tells you straight away whether your ads make or lose money.

Worked example

Ad spend $250, ad sales $1,000, total sales $3,000 and a 30% margin before ads. ACoS = 25%, ROAS = 4×, TACoS = 8.33%. Your break-even ACoS is 30%, so the ads are profitable and earn $50 after their cost. Work out your margin first with the Amazon FBA calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate ACoS?

Divide your ad spend by the sales those ads brought in and multiply by 100. For example, $250 ÷ $1,000 × 100 = 25% ACoS.

What is the difference between ACoS and ROAS?

They show the same thing in opposite ways. ACoS is ad spend divided by ad sales as a percentage; ROAS is ad sales divided by ad spend. 25% ACoS equals a 4× ROAS.

What is TACoS on Amazon?

TACoS is ad spend divided by total sales, including organic sales. It shows how much your whole business depends on advertising.

What is break-even ACoS?

Break-even ACoS equals your profit margin before ad costs. At that ACoS your ads neither make nor lose money.

What is a good ACoS on Amazon?

Any ACoS below your break-even ACoS is profitable. Many established products run between 15% and 30%, while launches often run higher on purpose.
